The philosophy of the sports medicine program includes:

  • Clinical Excellence
Patient care is a major tenet of our mission here in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University.

  • Advanced Team Care
Medical care of athletic teams includes care of the St. Louis Blues Hockey Team and the St. Louis Rams Football Team, as well as the Washington University athletic teams and teams from local high schools around the St. Louis area.
  • Comprehensive Education
The mentoring component assures that you have one-to-one experience with our faculty during your education. Your schedule will consist of six 2 month rotation block.  You may also have the opportunity to rotate with Drs. Ken Yamaguchi and Leesa Galatz of the Shoulder and Elbow service to gain in-depth exposure to adult, reconstructive procedures of the shoulder and elbow.

The didactic component includes Core curriculum and Sports Medicine service conferences as well as Journal Club conferences to reinforce your learning experience.

  • Focused Research
Faculty members within the department conduct both clinical and basic science research projects. Many projects are funded through research grants sponsored by the NIH, OREF, Barnes-Jewish Hospital or private industry. As part of the fellowship, the fellow is required to participate in one research project that results in publication during the fellowship.

As one of the three components of our mission as an academic health care leader, many chances for the fellow to participate in such research endeavors exist.
