Fellows are members of the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine with appointments as Instructors. It is anticipated that the fellowship will enhance the ongoing orthopaedic residency program

INSTITUTIONS: St. Louis Children's Hospital and the St. Louis Shriner's Hospital.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Perry L. Schoenecker, M.D.

FACULTY:     J. Eric Gordon, MD; Matthew B. Dobbs, MD; Scott Luhmann, MD and Kathryn Keeler, MD (Jan 2009)

EDUCATIONAL GOALS & CHARACTERISTICS:
The goals of the fellowship are:

  • To provide a method of comprehensive advanced training in pediatric orthopedics for physicians who plan to practice this subspecialty.
  • To intensify and promote the educational process of residents and senior staff within the hospital unit.
  • To enhance the care of patients within the hospital unit.
  • To provide a source of skilled orthopedic surgeons for various children's programs throughout the country.
  • To promote clinical and/or basic science research in the area of pediatric orthopedics.

Fellows spend approximately two thirds of their time at Shriners Hospital for Children and approximately one third of their time at St. Louis Children's Hospital. The fellow's time is divided among the services of Drs. Schoenecker and Gordon in the outpatient clinics, inpatient wards and the operating room. The fellow can anticipate a reasonable amount of independent activity in areas of clinical and operating room function commensurate with the level of training and demonstrated ability.

There are approximately 1500 surgical procedures per year at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital, and approximately 1000 at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Outpatient clinic visits number approximately 13,000 at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and 8000 at the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Exposure to portions of all of the above will be possible. In addition, the fellow will actively participate in the educational process and the organization of the pediatric orthopedic conferences held both at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and Washington University.

Numerous clinical publications and presentations have been and will continue to come forth from this institution. Opportunities are unlimited for a fellow in the area of retrospective and possibly prospective clinical research. The presence of a very effective medical secretarial and research assistant staff is an additional inducement to clinical research.
